What is digital print and why is it inexpensive on lower runs?
FAQ Category
Sunday, 12 December 2010 15:36

Digital print is a term coined from the printing process conducted on a digital press, in its infancy this referred generally to the pioneering Indigo presses but now covers a much wider array of different manufactures from glorified colour photo copiers to traditional full colour lithographic presses with a digital imaging unit attached. Generally digital print is cheaper on short run material due lack of plate making (not required) and zero make ready time. Digital presses are not as refined as traditional litho presses and as such the print quality is inferior, however cost savings on small jobs can be substantial.

I've had a cheaper quote will you be able to match it?

We should be able to match any like for like quote, however, there are certain circumstances that we cannot. Some suppliers will cut corners such as printing on substandard equipment, material and finishing or contract a project out to a far eastern country which often results in reduced quality and increased delivery times. Great design work is often compromised by budget printing, if you have spent considerable time and money on designing stationery, brochures or catalogues, the designers work can be quickly undone by cutting corners in print.

Under specified cheap or thin materials, lack of application of a sealing varnish, printing full colour on single colour presses and visa versa are all typical ways a printer can reduce the costs on a job, in most cases you get what you pay for and if its cheap the chances are it will look that way.
